rainbow carrotsThe holidays are upon us and will be marked throughout our community by gatherings of family and friends. This time of year has food rituals with ancient roots in many different cultures and religions.

My family’s tradition is for a Christmas feast featuring a beef roast, Yorkshire pudding, braised potatoes, glazed carrots, garlicky green beans, and warm apple pie with sharp cheddar melted on top. These dishes reflect one branch of my family’s (and our country’s) English Christian origins.

My husband’s Italian Catholic heritage has the feast of the seven fishes in which each of seven entrees is some sort of seafood. One of the wonderful things about our society is its diversity; and so there are delicious food traditions surrounding Hanukah, Bhodi Day (Buddhist), Christmas, Kwanzaa, and even the Winter Solstice!
