Shopping can be a challenge for those who suffer from food allergies, but visitors to the Market just need to make their way to the Simple Taste booth. There they will find a bounty of gluten, dairy, corn and yeast free foods, including breads, cakes, muffins, cookies, even pasta. The mastermind behind these allergy-safe goodies is Jenny Cleave, owner and founder of Simple Taste.

About 10 years ago, Jenny was diagnosed with allergies to gluten, dairy, and yeast. Worse yet, her allergies were cumulative, meaning that as time went on they became more severe, eventually life-threatening. Suddenly, her food options were severely limited. Commercially available gluten-free items still had dairy or yeast in them; many “allergy-safe” foods were tasteless and highly processed.

So Jenny set out to create safe recipes that actually resembled the foods she loved. In 2009 she was approached by a friend who worked for a large chain restaurant and needed gluten-free bread for a corporate luncheon. Jenny created a tortilla-style wrap that fit the bill, and Simple Taste Inc. was born.  Today, Jenny and her staff of 4 operate from a gluten-, yeast-, dairy- and corn-free bakery; and offer products that are nutritionally dense and free of chemicals and preservatives.

Over the years, she has come up with innovative recipes using fruit purees, almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and a host of other healthy ingredients. The team also specializes in avoiding cross-contamination, and maintains kitchens that are also egg and nut free. They take custom orders, and low-carb and diabetic options are available upon request. Just order ahead and pick up on Market Day.

At the BRFM, customers will find a selection of baked goods, along with pasta and seasonal items. “Our Paleo Flatbread is always very popular,” says Jenny, as are the brownies, cinnamon raisin muffins, cookies and more. “My biggest reward,” she continues, “comes when I can help make a child’s day with something special they never thought they could eat. Seeing their reaction — that’s why I do what I do.” Find out more about Simple Taste on their website, their facebook page, or follow them on twitter.
