On Tuesday October 9th, Regina Mehallick and her staff at R Bistro will be serving an exclusive 3-course meal in support of Indiana delegates to the Terra Madre and Salone del Gusto International Food Fair. The fair will be hosted by Slow Food International on October 25-29th.
This year’s Hoosier delegates are farmer and La Scala restaurateur Kristen Serrano of Lafayette, food activist Jennifer Burns of Indianapolis, and farmers (and BRFM vendors) Kathleen and Todd Jameson of FarmIndy. (John Ferree and Kelly Funk of Seldom Seen Farm were delegates in 2008.)
The event is focused on sustainable agriculture, fishing, and breeding from across the globe and this years’ slogan is “Foods that change the world.” Support for the delegates is typically provided by a combination of funding from Slow Food International, Slow Food USA, and contributions from local chapters such as Slow Food Indy.
As a former Terra Madre chef delegate, Regina Mehallick knows the value that attendees bring back to the community, and volunteered to host the dinner. In fact, Indiana’s burgeoning local food scene is being lead largely by former delegates of Terra Madre. During the event, participants are exposed to a variety of international food or products that have come from the Slow Food network.
Mehallick will be slow roasting a whole goat, which will be featured on a plate with butternut and spinach gratin, and a salad of apple and kohlrabi. The first course will be a salad of local arugula, roasted beets, and cheese from Ludwig Farmstead Creamery. Finishing the meal will be an apple persimmon bread pudding with Trader’s Point Creamery yogurt.
The cost of the meal is $50 plus gratuity and tax, a portion of which will help to fund the delegates trip to Terra Madre. Reservations are made by calling R Bistro directly at 317-423-0312. You can support our participating BRFM vendors and the local slow food movement and local food initiatives by attending.
